Experts Call for Eating Less Fat, Doing More Exercises

Overweight people had better take steps to get rid of flab so as to avoid suffering from hypertension, diabetes and other diseases.

The warning was made by the health experts who attended an international workshop on obesity that concluded yesterday, China Daily reported today.

With the improvement of living standard, an increasing number of people in China eat more fatty foods, and obesity has become a national health problem, said Kong Lingzhi of the Department for Disease Control, a branch of the Ministry of Health.

Kong attributes obesity to eating too much fat and a lack of exercise.

In China, 100 million people suffer from hypertension, while 26 million have diabetes. Obesity is a factor that can not be ignored, Kong said.

Chen Chunming, a nutrition professor said obesity is caused by hereditary factors and a high intake of fat.

Chen also warned that the practice of taking diet pills without the supervision of a doctor can be harmful.

The workshop, sponsored by the International Life Sciences Institute Focal Point on China, attracted researchers from China, the United States, Britain, Germany, and Australia.
