China's Garment Exports Rank No. 1 for Six Straight Years
It is known from the National Garment Industry Working Conference held in Shanghai April 25 that China's clothing industry produced 10 billion garments in 1999.The export of garments and accessories earned China US$ 30.06 billion, ranking first among the exports by various other trades in China, and accounting for 15.4 percent of the gross volume of exports. China has maintained the position as the No.1 clothing producer and exporter in the world for six consecutive years since 1994, with its total garment export value representing one-sixth of the world's total.
It is more gratifying that in the adjustment of its product mix in recent years, China's garment industry has paid attention to the application of hi-tech in the renovation of traditional industry, closely followed changes in the fashion trend, vigorously used new material, introduced advanced technology and improved product quality. Sources published by a US authoritative organization show that the average unit price of China's garments exported to the United States in 1998 was 26 percent higher than that of the garments the US imported from 77 countries and regions, and the ratio further surged to 33 percent one year later. This fact shows that the general level of China's exported garments has risen from the low-grade to the middle-grade level.
