China Win Opening Match in Fed Cup

Second-seeded China won the opening match of the Federation Cup Asia-Oceania zone qualifying rounds Tuesday together with Indonesia, Chinese Taipei and Kazakhstan in Osaka, Japan.

Fourth-seeded Thailand suffered an upset to India. The winner of the Asia-Oceania Zone Group I will advance to the elite World Group of the Fed Cup women tennis competition in 2001. In the five-nation Pool A round-robin competition at the Utsubo Tennis hard court in western Japan, India beat fourth seeds Thailand 2-1 and Kazakhstan defeated Hong Kong, China, 2-1. In the six-nation Pool B competition, China beat South Korea 2- 1, third-seeded Chinese Taipei defeated Singapore 3-0 and Indonesia defeated New Zealand 3-0.

The round-robin competition will last until Saturday. The winners of Pool A and Pool B meet on Sunday to decide the champion in the Asia-Oceania zone.

In the Group II, Uzbekistan defeated Pacific Oceania 2-1 and Malaysia defeated Fiji 3-0 in the five-nation round-robin Pool A competition.

In the six-nation Pool B competition, Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan 2-1, Tajikistan defeated Syria 3-0 and the Philippines defeated Jordan 3-0.

The winner of Group II will be replaced with the last team in Group I.
