Jiang Zemin Reiterates China's Stance on Taiwan Issue

Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Tuesday that China always adheres to the principles of peaceful reunification and "one country, two systems" in the settlement of the Taiwan issue.

"We said in the past, and still hold that no matter who is in power in Taiwan, we all welcome them to come to the mainland for talks, and we can also go to Taiwan for the negotiation," Jiang said during his talks with South African President Thabo Mbeki.

"However, the one China principle is the prerequisite of the dialogues and talks," he stressed. "Under this prerequisite, we can make discussions on everything."

"We would like to exchange views on the relations across the Taiwan Straits and peaceful reunification with all parties, organizations and personnel in Taiwan which support the one China principle," Jiang said.
