Six Assistant Procurators-General of Macao SAR Sworn In

The overall framework of the procuratorates of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) has been completed with six assistant procurators-general inaugurated Tuesday afternoon.

"The inauguration indicates that the judicial system in the SAR has entered a new phase under the guidance of the Macao Basic Law, " Procurator-General Ho Chio Meng said.

According to the Basic Law, procuratorates and courts are the judiciary of the Macao SAR. With the existence of three-level courts in the SAR, namely the Court of Final Appeal, Intermediate Court and primary courts, the procurator-general, assistant procurators-general and procurators are able to well exercise judicial responsibilities together with corresponding judges, Ho said.

"Acting as backbone members, the (assistant) procurators- general will become good examples of procurators in terms of their professional knowledge and personal integrity," the procurator- general said. "We are fully aware of the important responsibilities we shoulder in building a democratic, law-ruling, fair and progressive society in Macao," he said, adding that the main task of the procuratorates this year is to crack down on crimes and safeguard the rule of law.

In the meantime, the procurators will ensure that law- enforcement is carried out in strict accordance with the law, the procurator-general said.
