Cut Grain Output Possible Coming SummerReliable sources say less grain will be produced in coming summer than last in China.Recent survey on summer grain and oil-bearing crops this year by China's Agricultural Ministry says that crop areas have been predicted 5% down over same period last year, especially Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hubei and Sichuan Provinces, taking about 70% of the total reduction. Wheat-growing areas along the valleys of the Yellow and Huaihe rivers, North China and Northwest China have remained relatively stable. Rapeseeds have been sown over a record large area in China this year, up 10% over last year. In Hunan Province, these have been grown over an area of over 100 million mu (1hectre equals 15 mu), 70% of the total area sown to rapeseeds crop. The survey says that summer grain seedlings are growing well in general, however, the drought in north China and the continuous rain in some areas south of the Yangtze River and in southwest China have affected wheat growth. |
