Tibet Sees a Vigorous Growth in Foreign Trade

In 1999, the import and export in Tibet grew vigorously, realizing a total value of USD 0.166 billion, a rise of 51.4% as compared to the same period of the year before last, of which, import occupied USD 80.17 million and export 86.05 million. It is a growth of 25.4% and 87.6% respectively, both ranking at the forefront of foreign trade in China.

By focusing on frontier trade Tibet has brought its advantage of foreign trade system into full play, thus turning the previously shaky situation of frontier trade into a strong momentum of development. The total value of frontier trade hit US$80.44 million, covering nearly one half of the total foreign trade volume, a rise by 238%. The frontier export reaches US$71.43 million, covering 83% of the total export across the whole region, growing by 284%.

The foreign capital intake maintains a considerable scale in Tibet. Last year, eight foreign-funded enterprises were approved to be set up with US$6.48 million worth of foreign investment being taken in, and eight foreign aid-projects hosted by alien governments, and international organizations were offered to Tibet with a total recipient value amounting to US$ 10.07 million.
