Beijing to Turn Green

The national capital city of Beijing plans to complete erection of a 100-square-kilometer forest belt in the outskirts by year 2002, according of report of China Daily.

It quoted Zhang Yunchang, an official with the Beijing Municipal Afforestation Bureau, as saying that the area is where most of Beijing's three million laborers from outside the city dwell and the messy and dirty status of the city's outskirts has degenerated to an "unbearable" point, he explained.

He said that the project will not only help beautify the environment, but also provide an opportunity to readjust the industrial structure and clear out illegal residents living there.

He said that 40 percent of the belt has actually been completed over the past 40 years and more people will be mobilized to complete the task by 2002.

The military force stationed in Beijing has agreed to work for the belt from this year to 2002.
