Mainland and Hong Kong Police Stages Manoeuver

Some two thousand police from China's mainland and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region took part in a large land and sea manoeuver recently near the Shenzhen-Hong Kong border. It is the largest military manoeuver held after the Hong Kong handover in 1997.

The paramilitary exercise was intended to give practice in arresting criminals as part of the illegal border-crossing crackdown. It also involved a marine emergency rescue.

The paramilitary manoeuvre came in response to the increasing number of illegal border crossings in recent years.

In the land segment, police from Guangdong province practiced blocking people intending to cross to Hong Kong, while Hong Kong police practiced stopping people who had crossed the border illegally.

The joint manoeuver also involved closing in on an armed Hong Kong criminal gang.

Thirty-six police vessels also participated in the sea maneuvers. High speed motorboats were used to chase targets simulating attempts at illegal border crossings. There was also a practice at extinguishing fires on fishing boats at sea.
