Chinese to Be Used in Housing Contracts in Macao

Residents in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China can, beginning from May, choose either Chinese or Portuguese as the language used in housing and mortgage contracts, the Macao Daily News reported Monday.

The leading Chinese newspaper quoted government sources as saying that the Notarization Authority is able to complete contracts in the language requested by clients. Housing and mortgage contracts have been made only in Portuguese as a result of Portuguese rule in Macao, which was put to an end in last December. In fact, more than 95 percent of local residents are Chinese.

The Basic Law of the Macao SAR stipulates that both Chinese and Portuguese are official languages in Macao.

Government officials said that clients only have to provide basic data and the Notarization Authority will work out the text of contracts, in either Chinese or Portuguese.

The Notarization Authority has also reached agreements with local banks with regard to the use of Chinese in mortgage-related formalities.
