Experts Warn Internet Surfers Against Pricey Porno WebsitesExperts from the Ministry of Information Industry Tuesday warned Internet surfers in China that too many visits to pornographic websites may result in hefty international phone bills.In the past several months, some telephone users have complained to China Telecom about high international telephone bills for calls they said they did not make. They were told by experts from the National Computer Network and Information Security Administration Center under the ministry that surfers who visit certain adult websites and download a kind of software needed to view material on the site may not realize that the software actually dials a phone number, automatically cuts the original local links and sets up a new link using an international telephone number, leading to the high charges for calls. Huang Chengqing, an official from the ministry, said that since January this year, some users have been perplexed by their high telephone bills, mostly to small countries like Guyana. In March alone, some 1,600 people in Beijing received phone bills listing calls to Guyana. Huang warned surfers to be more aware of the perils of the Internet, and not to visit such sites and download their suspicious software.
