Chinese Vice-President Meets Kazakh Defense Minister

Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao said Tuesday that the further development of good-neighborly, mutual-benefit relations geared toward the 21st century between China and Kazakhstan and their armed forces will help to build up the two countries and their armies, and will help to ensure peace and development in the region and the world as a whole.

Hu, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks in a meeting with Kazakh Defense Minister S.Tokpakbayev here today.

He said that China and Kazakhstan are good neighbors joined by rivers and mountains, and relations between the two countries and armed forces have exhibited good development momentum in recent years thanks to support of top leaders of the two sides.

Defense ministers of China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan held the first meeting in Astana, capital of Kazakhstan, last month, Hu said, adding that China was satisfied with the results of the meeting.

He said that the two countries have reached consensus on many major regional and international issues.

Tokpakbayev said that relations between the two countries and armed forces have been developing smoothly in recent years, and the 1,700-plus-kilometer border between the two countries has become a bond of peace and friendship.

He said that the Kazakh government firmly supports China's position on the issues of Taiwan, the human rights and opposition to national separatism, and is also grateful for China's support in various fields.

Kazakhstan is willing to work with China to safeguard peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the world, he added.
