PLA Chief of General Staff Meets Turkish GuestsA senior Chinese military officer has said that the Chinese Liberation Army (PLA) has kept close tabs on the situation in the Taiwan Straits, and will not sit idly by and watch any attempt to split the motherland.Fu Quanyou, chief of General Staff of the PLA, made the remarks here today in a meeting with Nahit Senogul, president of Turkish comprehensive military institute. Fu, also a member of the Central Military Commission, said that China and Turkey have maintained friendly relations since the two countries forged diplomatic ties over 20 years ago. He said that the Turkey tour made by Chinese President Jiang Zemin recently fueled bilateral relations, elevating them to a new level. The relationship between the two armies is satisfactory, Fu said, adding that the frequent exchange of visit has promoted the mutual understanding between the two armies. Fu also briefed the guests on China's domestic situation and the development of its army, and explained the stance of the Chinese government on the Taiwan issue. Senogul said that Turkey and China have enjoyed a long-term friendship although the two countries are far apart. Turkey respects Chinese sovereignty and territorial integrity, and adheres to the "one-China" principle. Senogul said he hoped to strengthen the exchanges and cooperation between the Turkish military institute and the Chinese PLA University of National Defense. Xing Shizhong, president of the Chinese PLA University of National Defense, was among those present at the meeting.
