Ericsson Tapping China's Mobile Internet Market

Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson plans to launch its newly-developed Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) phones in China in the second half of this year.

An Ericsson source said that his company has listed China as a target market for its mobile Internet technology products.

Ericsson (China) Co., Ltd has already signed an agreement with China Motion Network Co., Ltd to jointly develop the mobile Internet market in China this year, the source said.

According to the agreement, Ericsson will provide advisory services and mobile application platforms, such as WAP, and a mobile e-mail box platform.

Following an exhibition in Shanghai last week, Ericsson will display its WAP phones in Beijing and Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, at the end of April and in May, respectively.

WAP technology was developed by leading mobile phone manufacturers including Ericsson, Nokia and Motorola for the connection of handsets with the Internet.

The latest figures show that China now has 40 million mobile phone users and ten million Internet users.
