China Implementing Program Against Maritime Oil SpillA national maritime program projected to deal with oil-leaking emergencies has just been kicked off through out China.The program, worked out by the Maritime Safety Administration of China, consists of three sub-programs designed respectively for the whole country, for major sea regions such as the East China Sea, the South China Sea and the Taiwan Straits, and for major ports. In China, a total of 29,000 tons of oil was leaked out in 53 serious accidents from 1973 to 1999. Statistics show that during 1965 to 1997, a total of 4.14 million tons of oil was leaked out around the world. Experts said that the program will play an active role in protecting China's ocean environment and promoting the sustainable development of ocean economy.
