Corrupt Official Executed in GuangxiA former vice-mayor of the city of Guigang, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, was executed April 23 in Yulin following his conviction and sentencing for accepting bribes.Li Chenglong, born in the city of Beiliu in Guangxi in 1952, accepted bribes of 3.74 million yuan, 25,000 U.S. dollars, and 10, 000 HK dollars from 18 organizations and individuals for appointments of officials and approval of various businesses and construction project contracts while serving as secretary of the Yulin City Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) from 1991 to 1996. In addition, he failed to present evidence for the source of 5. 66 million yuan and a large amount of foreign currency and jewelry. The Intermediate People's Court in the city of Yulin sentenced Li to death, stripped him of all political rights, and confiscated 100,000 yuan of his personal property during a public trial held on January 25 last year. Li appealed to the Higher People's Court, which later rejected his appeal and sustained the judgment of the first instance. |
