China's Passenger Traffic Rises, Freight Falls

China's passenger traffic grew in the first two months of 2000 while its freight traffic saw a decrease, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics.

The number of passengers moved by China's transport systems in the Jan-Feb period reached 2.43 billion, 4.40 percent more than the same period of 1999.

The highway sector accounted for 2.21 billion passengers during the period, a year-on-year rise of 3.80 percent; the railways, 179 million, up 12.29 percent; the airlines, 10 million, up 7.89 percent; and the waterways, 33 million, up 3.87 percent.

Meanwhile, total freight traffic in the period reached 1.91 billion tons, down 4.47 percent.

The highway sector handled 1.49 billion tons of cargo, down 5. 03 percent year-on-year; the railway sector, 253 million tons, up 1.23 percent; the civil aviation sector, 268,700 tons, up 16.08 percent; and the waterway sector, 178 million tons, down 7.34 percent.
