Xinjiang's Import And Export Up in First Quarter

Statistics from local customs showed that the import and export volume of northwest China's Xinjiang Ugyur Autonomous Region reached US$ 413 million in the first three months of the year, up some 40 percent over the same period last year, with export standing at US$ 245 million.

In the January-March period, Xinjiang's general trade export increased by 90 percent, accounting for half of Xinjiang's total foreign trade.

Imports and exports of Xinjiang's state-owned and collectively- owned enterprises made up 90 percent of Xinjiang's total foreign trade.

Officials from the Xinjiang regional foreign trade and economic cooperation department said that Kazakhstan remains a major trade partner of Xinjiang. Trade between Xinjiang and Kazakstan amounted to 200 million dollars during the January-March period, accounting for half of Xinjiang's total foreign trade.

Meanwhile, Xinjiang's foreign trade with the Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Malaysia also increased.

The officials said cotton remains Xinjiang's major export commodity, with cotton exports reaching 100 million dollars, or nearly 30 percent of its total foreign trade.

However, experts estimated that Xinjiang's cotton export will decline in the coming months as cotton inventories are reduced.
