Education is Common Responsibility of All SocietyThe People's Daily, China's leading newspaper, is calling for strengthening and improving education to create a new prospect for education in the country. In an editorial, the daily says that inspired by Chinese President Jiang Zemin's recent speech on education, all sectors in China have expressed their enthusiastic support for the development of education. The speech represents the great emphasis on education by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China with Jiang Zemin at the core, and it will have far-reaching significance for the development of education in China, the editorial says. In his speech, Jiang Zemin pointed out the existing weaknesses in the country's education system, and outlined the orientation, tasks, and principles for developing education. Education is not only a matter for educators, but also common responsibility of the Party committees and government at all levels, as well as that of all society, it says. The implementation of the speech calls for accelerating educational reforms and development, and promoting quality education, says the editorial, noting that this is a fundamental principle for revitalizing the Chinese nation through science and education. The editorial calls for further deepening reforms in higher education, expanding the enrollment of university students, promoting secondary and higher vocational education, and establishing a life-long education system in order to cultivate talents. It urges the creation of a healthy, scientific, and civilized social and culture environment to facilitate the growth of teenagers. It also calls for the publishing of more materials for the healthy growth of youngsters and the building of more cultural places for their activities after school. Education must not be ignored in China while economy is being developed, it says, adding that economic development must not be promoted at the expense of sacrificing education and the healthy growth of the young.
