Israel Continues Bombing on South Lebanon

Israel continued its bombardment on villages in the central sector of south Lebanon Sunday morning, Oriental Radio reported.

The latest Israeli raid was focused on the villages of Sahel Youhel and Mazlat Hamla and hit a vehicle on the road between the two villages, but no casualty was reported.

Retaliatory attacks between the Israeli troops and Lebanese resistance guerrillas intensified after Israel formally notified the United Nations that it would pull out its troops from south Lebanon by July after a 22-year occupation.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak had stressed that his country would harshly retaliate if the resistance continues firing Katyushas to northern Israel or causes any casualties to Israeli targets after the Israeli withdrawal.

Israel has occupied parts of south Lebanon since 1978. It set up the present "security zone" in 1985 with the excuse of protecting its northern settlements from cross-border guerrilla attacks.

Iranian and Syrian-backed Hezbollah, or Party of God, has since been leading a guerrilla war aimed to oust the Israeli occupation forces.
