Zhejiang Police Official Jailed for Taking Bribes

The Zhoushan City Intermediate People's Court in east China's Zhejiang Province sentenced former frontier police official Li Yuejian to a 20-year prison term after he was convicted of accepting bribes and helping a criminal suspect escape arrest.

Li, head of an armed police detachment at Zhoushan, accepted a bribe of 20,000 HK dollars from Dong Xinsu in 1998, and in 1999 received another 50,000 yuan from Dong, a diesel oil smuggler. From June to August of 1999, Dong smuggled 33,000 tons of diesel oil by sea into the city, and then sent 300,000 yuan to Li for his part in the operation.

On September 24, 1999, the police uncovered the case of Dong and his elder brother Dong Xinxian, and Li Yuejian used his car to help Dong Xinxian attempt to escape arrest.
