Chinese FM Meets Australian Counterpart

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan Suncay met with his Australian counterpart Alexander Downer who is in Beijing attending the 2000 Asia Leaders' Forum.

Tang said that President Jiang Zemin made a successful state visit to Australia last year during which leaders of both countries reached consensus on establishing comprehensive cooperative relations featuring long-term stability and healthy development oriented toward the 21st century, pointing out that Sino-Australian relations have now entered a new era.

Tang expressed satisfaction with the fine momentum of friendly exchanges and cooperation in the fields of politics and trade and economy. Tang also reiterated China's principled stand on the Taiwan issue.

Downer agreed with Tang's positive evaluations of the development of bilateral ties, and in particular stressed the significance of Jiang's visit to Australia last year.

The Australian government attaches importance to developing ties with China and will continue to maintain its one-China policy, he said.
