China to Further Cooperation With UNESCOChina's National Committee for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will focus on programs that will promote cooperation with UNESCO worldwide.Today's China Daily quoted Zhang Xuezhong, secretary-general of the committee, as saying that his committee will apply for UNESCO' s assistance in projects of illiteracy-elimination, primary and middle school learning and environmental education in a bid to boost China's national drive to develop the western region. The committee will help improve teaching at the Training Center for Rural Education in Baoding of north China's Hebei Province. The center, set up in 1996 with UNESCO's support, aims to popularize farming skills in China's rural areas. The center has provided necessary training for other countries to develop education in rural areas. According to Zhang, his committee will participate in such international activities as Man and Biosphere, International Hydrology Plan and Conference of World Copyright Convention Committee this year. As a member of UNESCO, China has conducted many exchanges, such as in vocational education, with the organization over the past few years. Educational programs targeting women and girls have also been promoted in Sichuan, Shaanxi, Gansu and Guizhou provinces and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, said Zhang. |
