Jiang's Visit a MilestoneGreek President Costis Stephanopoulos described Chinese President Jiang Zemin's current Greece visit as an "important milestone" in the development of the bilateral ties. The people of the two countries are full of confident in the further development of the bilateral relations in the 21st century, he said at a banquet he hosted in Jiang's honor. Extending his warm welcome to Jiang, Stephanopoulos expressed his appreciation for China's progress in the construction of China and its important role in the international affairs. He said that although the bilateral relations have enjoyed stable progress since the diplomatic ties were forged in 1972, there is still great potential to tap in the economic cooperation and trade between the two countries. The sound political relations have laid solid foundation for the economic cooperation between the two countries, he noted. Greece's upcoming admission to European Economic and Monetary Union will create more favorable conditions for the Greece-China cooperation, the president said. Greece hopes that the relations between the European Union and China will keep on improving and advancing, he said, adding his country hopes that China will enter into the World Trade Organization at an earlier date. He spoke highly of China's ``One China, Two Systems'' principle, and reiterated that Greece will adhere to the one China policy and hopes that the Taiwan problem will be resolved peacefully.
