Jiang Calls for Closer China-Greece Parliamentary TiesVisiting Chinese President Jiang Zemin expressed his hope on Saturday that the cooperative ties between the legislatures of China and Greece will be further strengthened.Jiang told Greek Parliament President Apostolos Kaklamanis in Athens that China has always attached great importance to the development of friendly cooperative relations with Greece, and that he is satisfied with the smooth development of bilateral exchanges and cooperation in all fields. Jiang added that China welcomes more cooperation between its legislature, the National People's Congress, and the Greek parliament, and more visits to China by the Greek deputies and personnel of various circles to increase their knowledge of China. Jiang also hoped for the promotion of mutual understanding and expansion of bilateral cooperation by encouraging all-level contacts in different fields of the two countries. On his part, Kaklamanis extended his warm welcome to Jiang, who is in Greece for a four-day state visit, the first by a Chinese head of state since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Greece in June 1972. The speaker expressed his belief that Jiang's visit will strengthen cooperation between the two governments and the two legislatures. After the meeting, Jiang held separate talks with the leader of Greece's main opposition New Democracy, Costas Karamanlis, Communist Party Secretary General Aleko Papariga and President of the Coalition of the Left Nikos Constantopoulos. Praising these parties for their roles in the smooth development of Chinese-Greek ties, Jiang hoped that they will make greater contributions to the development of bilateral ties in the new century. Greece is the fourth leg of Jiang's ongoing five-nation tour, which has already taken him to Israel, Palestine and Turkey. Before his visit to Turkey, Jiang flew from Palestine to Egypt's Mediterranean port city of Alexandria for a brief meeting with President Hosni Mubarak. After his stay in Greece, Jiang will travel on to South Africa for his first-ever visit to the country.
