Guangdong, Canada to expand trade ties

Guangzhou Food Enterprise Group Corp and Canadian Fung Yip Import and Export Company yesterday signed a trade co-operative memorandum to expand business ties.

According to the memorandum, the Guangzhou company will mainly import pork and fish from Canada and it will buy fruits and vegetables produced at this southern Chinese province.

The Canadian firm will mainly import Guangdong's high quality subtropical fruits, including litchee and pomeloes, and vegetables, including wax gourds.

Visiting Canadian Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Lyle Vanclief and Wang Shouchu, vice-mayor of Guangzhou, attended the signing ceremony in this provincial capital.

Vanclief, leader of the agriculture delegation, arrived in Guangzhou on Thursday, amid high expectations of expansion of trade ties between Canada and Guangdong Province which borders Hong Kong and Macao.

Vanclief and his group met Wang Qishan, executive vice-governor of Guangdong, Situ Shao, director of agriculture, yesterday to seek trade and investment opportunities in prosperous Guangdong.

The Canadian delegation also visited a number of fruit and vegetable production bases in Guangdong and showed great interest in working with Guangdong, particularly in the high-tech agricultural sector in the following years.

In 1998, Delta Management Canada Inc, Hydronov Inc and Shenzhen Changling Stock Co-operate Co set up a US$5.6 million joint venture, Shenzhen Evergreen Vegetables Co Ltd.

The joint venture is now producing about 5 tons of vegetables per day.
