China should make Seed Law: Official

China still lags behind the developed countries in the area of farm seeds, and the sector urgently needs to be protected by a law, said Jiang Chunyun, a vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.

Jiang said making a law on farm seeds should help to promote and protect agricultural productivity and benefit farmers, Jiang made the remark while visiting local breeding companies and a seed market in the suburbs of Beijing, and Langfang City in Hebei Province from April 18-21.

During his investigative tour, Jiang held three discussions with local experts and lawmakers on research, breeding, and trade of farm seeds.

In his talks with local people, the official highlighted the importance of making a law on farm seeds, saying that seeds is the origin of the farm crops that is related to the interests of farmers and living standards of the people.

Since the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, the country's grain output has increased from 100 billion kg to 500 billion kg, according to Jiang.
