Germany Assisting China in Environmental Protection

Germany will focus its aid to China this year on environmental protection in the process of developing the country's vast western region, city development, and resources management, according to the German Embassy.

Klaus Wild, a minister with the embassy, said this year is very important in Germany-China cooperation in the area of environmental protection as many projects will be carried out, and Germany will provide technical and financial support to China through their long-standing cooperation.

China's central government has made the decision to jump-start western development as a state strategy in order to accelerate the economic growth of the region.

In addition to promoting environment-friendly production and the efficient utilization of resources, Wild also expressed great concern about the protection of water resources in China's Three Gorges Project, which will be the country's biggest dam on its largest river, the Yangtze.

China is currently the biggest recipient of German environmental protection aid, and the two nations are setting up pilot zones in north China to promote environment-friendly intensive farming.

Germany's aim in helping China tackle its environmental problems lies not only in the establishment of a sound global environment, which is subject to China's environmental situation, but is also part of the plan to import agricultural products from China including vegetables, flowers, spices, and medicinal plants, according to Wild.

Sino-German technical cooperation dates back to 1982, and a total of one billion Deutsche Marks has been directed to China since then.
