Coastal City Hosts Expo on Tourism

China's 2000 Tourism Exposition officially opened on April 20 in the port city of Dalian in northeast China's Liaoning Province.

Representatives from travel agencies, hotels, and handicraft and souvenir companies, holiday resorts from China, Thailand, Malaysia, and other countries are attending the Expo.

Some 860 indoor booths have been set up in the 20,000-square- meter exhibition hall. Outside the Exhibition Hall, buses and light aircraft are also on exhibit.

During the opening ceremony, deputy director of the National Tourism Administration Zhang Xiqin said the Expo will introduce China's tourism resources to the world and strengthen cooperation with overseas counterparts.

China has about 12 national holiday resorts, 120 national scenic spots and more than 750 cultural relics under state protection. Twenty-four natural scenic spots and cultural relics are listed as worldwide heritage sites by UNESCO.

The Expo is being jointly sponsored by the National Tourism Administration and the Dalian government.
