China to Reform Key Laboratories

China is to reform its 153 key laboratories. Labs with poor research equipment and facilities will be cut from the list of key state labs, replaced by those involved in promising scientific research fields.

Since 1984, China has invested 1.4 billion yuan in building 156 state laboratories in most research fields, of which only 153 survived.

A shortage of research funding has been a major problem for their survival and development.

The reforms will allow the introduction of outside financing and cooperation with other organizations.

Labs in similar research fields will be merged, and the outdated labs will be closed.
