The Fifth China International News Coverage Prize sponsored by the Information Office of the State Council (IOSC) was awarded to several news media in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province on April 20. "NATO Bombs Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia", "Power Tramples Human Rights" and "Chinese Ambassador Repudiates American Embolum" from People's Daily won top honors. The other top prize- winners include "1999, the Turbulent Year" by Wang Shubo from Xinhua News Agency; and "From China-US Summit To Sino-American Relations" by three reporters from China Central Television Station. 20 stories including "What's Intention of Depreciating China?" of People's Daily won the second place prize and 30 others the third.
The appraisal committee also announced a special prize to commemorate the late three Chinese reporters who laid down their lives in the NATO bombing of Chinese embassy on May 8 last year.
Two of their stories, "Solemn and Stirring Belgrade" by Shao Yunhuan from Xinhua News Agency and " Undaunted Songs" by Xu Xinghu from Guangming Daily written on the eve of their death, won the special award.
