Beijing Holds SCOPE Symposium

A symposium called by SCOPE on environment was held in the Hall of Science & Technology, Beijing, from April 14 to 18.

It's the first time China hosts such symposium over the past 30 years. Some 56 foreign representatives from nearly 30 countries attended the meeting and exchanged their views with each other over the environmental issues that all the countries are now confronted with.

In recent years, SCOPE has organized about 40 national academies of sciences to adress the urgent and potential environmental problems all over the world, thereby providing the governments with scientific information for solving them.

At the conference, 35 Chinese experts in environmental science and young scientists and technicians gave speeches on global environmental changes, environment and health, ecological system processes and engineering project, environment management and policies, ecological city development and regional sustainability and development of China's west as well. All these have won the great applause from scholars at home and abroad.

Zhou Guangzhao, President of China Academy of Sciences extended welcome to the executive committee of SCOPE, briefing them on China's major environmental worries brought about by rapid economic development and expressed his wishes for strengthening the cross-nation cooperation between scientists.
