China Hastens Three Gorges ConstructionThe government of Chongqing has decided to invest 45 billion yuan (US$ 5.4 billion) to build a highway network in upcoming four or five year. Half of the highway network will cover the dam areas of the Three Gorges Water-Control Project.Relocation of residents living in the dam areas is part of the smooth construction of the gigantic Three Gorges Power Project, the largest of its kind in the world. As the construction of Three Gorges Dam has entered the second stage, about 100,000 residents are required to move out of the dam areas in each of the next 10 years. Shanghai and 10 provinces in eastern China promise to receive the settlement of 70,000 migrants. Last year, the government of Chongqing invested 400 million yuan (US$ 48.1 million) to build 820 km of roads linking resettlement villages with the municipal highway network. New roads with a total length of 350 km will be built this year. A highway network connecting all the resettlement villages is expected to be set up by 2001, said Li Jian, deputy director of the Chongqing Municipal Communications Department. As 164 primary and secondary schools at six counties in Wanzhou Prefecture will be submerged during the second phase of the dam construction, the local government will allocate 500 million yuan (US$ 60 million) to move 88 schools to other parts of the prefecture this year.
