Positive Changes Occur in Economic Performance This Year
A meeting of Financial Committee of NPC (National People's Congress) was held in Beijing on April 17 and 18. The participants hold that positive changes are occurring in economic operation since the beginning of this year, laying a solid foundation for realizing the target of the whole year's economic and social development. However, some fundamental contradictions affecting sustainable and fast economic growth has not yet been solved, the problem of insufficient internal demand being still a prominent one.
The department concerned of the State Council briefed the meeting on the national economic performance and the analysis and research on the current economic trend, existing problems and this year's work. The participants have an opinion that this year sees a good beginning in national economic performance and a trend of obvious improvement. The GDP at comparable prices rises by 8.1% as compared with the same period of last year. The planting structure in agriculture is further improving and crops are growing well. The industrial production continues to grow fast, and the efficiency of enterprises improving remarkably. Sales in the market is vigorous and price level has seen somewhat pickup. Foreign trade grows quickly and the foreign exchange reserve continues to increase, the RMB exchange rate remains stable and financial revenue grows fast and the financial operation is steady.
At present, obviously the investment demand is insufficient and the overall price is at low level. The economic structure is by no means rational and the readjustment is quite difficult. It is a still an arduous task to fulfill the objective and task for the national social and economic development and The relation between reform, development, and stability should be properly dealt with, the macro-economic adjustment and control should be strengthened, the reform of SOEs , economic structural adjustment, technical progress and expansion of internal demand should be given priority to strengthen the works on key problems affecting the realization of this year's economic and social development objective.
