Li Peng Meets Ukrainian Chairman of Supreme Court Vitaly BoikoLi Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), met with Vitaly Boiko, Ukrainian chairman of the Supreme Court, who arrived in Beijing Wednesday for a week-long visit. Li spoke highly of the relationship between China and Ukraine.He said that China and Ukraine have maintained friendly, cooperative relations in various fields since the two countries established diplomatic relations eight years ago. Leaders of the two countries exchange visits frequently, and the two sides have conducted cooperation of mutual benefit in economic areas, and have supported each other in international affairs, Li noted. The swaps of visits between leaders of the supreme courts of China and Ukraine have played an important role in the exchange and cooperation in the judiciary systems of the two countries, Li said. The NPC chairman told the Ukraine guest that China has written into its constitution the principle of "ruling the country by law and building a socialist country based on the rule of law." This shows that China has entered a new era in building a socialist democracy and legal system. In addition, Li said that the supervising role of the NPC is being strengthened in China. Boiko said that Ukraine-China relations have been very good, and the cooperation between the two supreme courts has been very fruitful. Boiko said his country is trying to build a legal and law-enforcement system that is suited to the specific conditions of Ukraine. Ukraine wants to learn from China in that process. Boiko handed to Li a letter written by Ivan Plyushch, chairman of the Supreme Council of Ukraine, who has invited Li to pay an official visit to Ukraine. Li expressed his thanks. Xiao Yang, president of China's Supreme People's Court, who signed a cooperation agreement with his Ukrainian counterpart Wednesday, was present at the meeting.
