China to Commend Model Workers Ahead of May Day

About 3,000 Chinese model workers and advanced workers will be commended in the days running up to International Labor Day on May 1, it was announced Thursday.

The State Council will hold a large-scale conference in Beijing from April 28-30, at which 2,950 model individuals will be cited for their contributions.

Cui Zhanfu, vice-chairman of the organizing committee of the conference, said at a press conference that all the outstanding workers made important contributions to the reform and opening up and socialist modernization drive over the past five years.

Cui, also deputy secretary-general of the State Council, said that of all the prominent workers, those from enterprises account for 36.78 percent and peasants for 19 percent, while scientists, engineers and technicians and teachers make up 27.2 percent and managers, 7.36 percent.
