More Power Stations To Be Built on Upper Reaches of Yellow RiverChina plans to build more hydro- power stations on the upper reaches of the Yellow River in the next few years to tap rich electric power resources in the area.An official in charge of the China National Electric Power Company said that some of the large and medium-sized projects will start this year. The 918-kilometer-long section of the Yellow River between the Longyang Gorge in Qinghai Province and Qingtong Gorge in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region has a 1,324 meter drop, containing great potential for developing electric power. The official said that 25 large and medium-sized power stations designated have a combined installed capacity of 15.878 million kilowatts, generating 56.77 billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually. Seven power stations completed or under construction boast a combined installed capacity of 5.618 million kilowatts. Only one- third of the total hydropower resources in the upper reaches of the Yellow River have been developed. With the construction of these power projects, the hydro-power resources in the upper reaches of the Yellow River will be fully exploited. The 5,400-km-long Yellow River originates in the Qinghai-Tibet plateau in northwest China, runs through nine provinces and autonomous regions, and flows into the Bohai Sea in east China.
