Top 10 Killer Diseases of Chinese

According to the annual statistical report released by the Ministry of Health, the top ten killer diseases of urban Chinese and corresponding death rates in 1999 are ranked as follows:

1. Malignant Tumors 140.47 per 100,000 people;

2. Cerebral Vascular Diseases 127.18 per 100,000 people;

3. Heart Disease 98.92 per 100,000 people;

4. Diseases of Respiratory System 81.68 per 100,000 people;

5. Injury & Poisoning 36.95 per 100,000 people;

6. Diseases of Digestive Tract 17.86 per 100,000 people;

7. Endocrinopathy, Metabolic and Nutritional Diseases & Immunologic Disease 16.87 per 100,000 people;

8. Urinary and Reproductive System Diseases 8.87 per 100,000 people;

9. Mental Disorders 6.67 per 100,000 people;

10. Nervous Disease 5.28 per 100,000 people.

Death tolls caused by the above-mentioned diseases accounted for 91.96 percent of the total in 1999.

Following are the top ten killer diseases of rural Chinese and corresponding death rates in 1999

1. Diseases of Respiratory System 133.69 per 100,000 people;

2. Malignant Tumors 111.62 per 100,000 people;

3. Cerebral Vascular Diseases 111.57 per 100,000 people;

4. Heart Disease 74.99 per 100,000 people;

5. Injury & Poisoning 66.90 per 100,000 people;

6. Diseases of Digestive Tract 24.15 per 100,000 people;

7. Urinary and Reproductive System Diseases 9.24 per 100,000 people;

8. Diseases of Newborn 810.18 per 100,000 people (based on the figure of live birth);

9. Tuberculosis 7.88 per 100,000 people;

10. Endocrinopathy, Metabolic and Nutritional Diseases & Immunologic Disease 6.40 per 100,000 people.

Death tolls caused by the above-mentioned diseases accounted for 91.41 percent of the total in 1999.
