China Becomes World's Largest Ceramics Producer

China has become the world's largest ceramics producer, turning out 1.584-billion sq m of architectural ceramics and 55 million pieces of sanitary ceramics annually.

China has witnessed a boom in ceramics development over the past ten years, and has developed more than 800 large and medium- sized enterprises, as well as thousands of township enterprises in the architectural and sanitary ceramics sector, according to Wu Bin, executive vice-president of the Building Materials Chamber of Commerce under the China Chamber of International Commerce.

Wu said that the cities of Foshan, Tangshan and Boshan have become the country's largest ceramics production bases. He noted that the booming building sector has provided great opportunities for the development of architectural and sanitary ceramics production.

Presently, the country's annual urban and rural housing construction averages at 300 million and 600 million sq m, respectively, creating a huge market for these products.

According to the official, widespread Sino-foreign cooperation and exchanges have boosted the upgrading of technology and the diversification of ceramics products.

The official said that more than 440 ceramics businesses have introduced complete production lines from abroad, including more than 2,000 automatic ceramics press machines introduced from Italy, Germany, Japan and other countries.
