NPC Chairman Meets Romanian Delegation

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), met with a delegation of the Party of Social Democracy of Romania at the Great Hall of the People on April 19 afternoon.

The delegation, headed by Adrian Nastase, first vice-president of the Party of Social Democracy of Romania (PSD) and also vice- president of the Chamber of Deputies of Romania, is visiting China at the invitation of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, extended a warm welcome to the delegation and spoke highly of Sino-Romanian relations, noting that although changes have taken place in both countries and the world at large, a good momentum has been maintained for relations between the two countries.

The Chinese government and people deeply treasure the friendship with Romania, and are willing to bring a steady, healthy and comprehensive bilateral relationship into the new century, he said.

Li also noted the NPC strongly supports cooperation with the Romanian parliament, and that contacts between parliament leaders, friendship committees and specialized committees would all benefit the traditional friendship.

Meanwhile, he had high praise for relations between the CPC and the PSD, noting the CPC is willing to communicate with the PSD and other Romanian parties on the basis of independence, total equality, mutual respect, and non-interference in each other's internal affairs.

Nastase said although Romania and China are far apart, they have maintained a close friendship which will continue no matter which party comes into rule. The PSD has always supported China on the Taiwan and human rights issues, he said, expressing the hope that both political and economic cooperation would be reinforced in the future.
