Forestry Experts Appeal for Ecological Construction in China's West
The sandstorms which hit north China this spring for seven consecutive times have again sounded the alarm against ecological unbalance.
Experts attending a forum on sandstorm held by the State Forestry Administration on April 19 unanimously appealed for high attention to ecological construction in the large-scale development of China's west to immediately do a good job in the prevention and control of desertification. Nearly 20 experts from colleges and institutes participated in the lively discussion.
They maintained that some natural disasters like drought, gale are difficult to avoid and people can hardly do anything about them, while the worsening of desertification is closely related to the people's activities. Many human activities, such as indiscriminate reclamation and felling, denudation, excessive grazing and irrational use of water resources, are important reasons for the destruction of vegetation and deterioration of the ecological environment.
