Beijing Judges Learning English

Guo Yanzhi, a young woman judge with the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court, is happy to have the opportunity of participating in English training courses organized by her superior.

"We often have to deal with business letters, faxes, and other materials written in English, so improving our English will help us do a better job," she said.

For He Bo, another young judge in the one-year English course, the purpose of mastering the language is to learn more about the legal systems of other countries.

According to Gao Xiaoling, an official in charge of education and training for the Beijing Higher Court, the English course Guo and He are taking is the first of its kind in Beijing.

"With the increase in the number of foreign-related cases and international exchanges, we need more judges who know some English, " Gao said.

He said that in 1999 alone, more than 700 judges, lawyers, and law researchers from 21 countries and regions visited Beijing.
