Suzhou Strengthens Overseas Economic Cooperation

The scenic city in east China's Jiangsu Province reports booming economic exchanges with overseas in the first quarter of this year.

Latest statistics show that the city imported and exported US$ 3.8 billion of goods in the three-month period, up more than 50 percent on a yearly basis. The exports reached US$ 1.96 billion.

The exports to the United States, the city's largest export destination, reached US$ 473 million, up 44.2 percent; the exports to European Union, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Africa and Latin America all went up by big margins. Local sources said that the exports of high-tech machinery and electronic products and textile products increased sharply. According to statistics, Suzhou introduced US$ 1.38 billion of contractual foreign investment in the first quarter of this year, up 127.1 percent.

A total of 15 state- and provincial-level development zones drew 981 million US dollars of contractual foreign investment in the period.

The city also approved 46 foreign-funded projects whose investment volume surpassed ten million US dollars each.
