Xinhua Refutes Annette Lu's Description of Cross-Straits Ties

Xinhua News Agency Wednesday published yet another commentary condemning the pro-independence remarks made recently by Annette Lu, a member of the Taiwan-based Democratic Progressive Party.

The commentary is titled "Lu's description of cross-Straits relations as being that of distant relatives and close neighbors is clearly a denial of the one-China principle."

Lee Teng-hui, who was just defeated in local elections in the Taiwan region, has repeatedly come out with ridiculous analogies to sum up the cross-Straits ties, calling them "special state-to- state relations" and saying "the Republic of China is located in Taiwan."

Lu has outdone Lee in this regard, consistently trying to make distinctions between Taiwan and China, and the Taiwanese and Chinese. She has foolishly claimed that "Taiwan's sovereignty is independent and nobody can deny it."

Lu, who has been dangerously liberal in her attempts to separate Taiwan from China, is ignoring history and public opinion. She has been exposed to the world as a strident champion of " Taiwan independence."

However, Lu cannot deny the blood ties between the compatriots who live on both sides of the Straits and the fact that Taiwan has been part of China since ancient times.

The entire Chinese nation has strongly opposed the stubborn " Taiwan independence" stance taken by Lu and Lee. Lu even cooked up the absurd theory that the fall of the Kuomintang cleared the way for "Taiwan independence," the commentary says.

"Taiwan independence" elements -- like Lu -- ignores logic and historical fact in its desire to split China.

Lee and Lu, though they wear different disguises and adopt different means to challenge the one-China principle, are both working toward the same goal to divide China, it says.

The commentary goes on to explain why separatists fear and loathe the one-China principle, saying that their dream of "Taiwan independence" can never come true and the separatists will come to no good end.

Lee Teng-hui has tried time and again to wipe out the Kuomintang because the party used to recognize the fact that there is only one China.

Annette Lu, who believes that the mainland could not afford a war, has followed in Lee's footsteps to gamble with the interests of 23 million Taiwan people by openly advocating "Taiwan independence," the commentary says.

Saying she has shamelessly betrayed her motherland for wealth and power, the commentary warns Lu that she has figured wrong on China's position.

It stresses that the one-China principle is the basis for the peaceful reunification of the motherland and the smooth development of the cross-Straits relations principle. (Xinhua)
