Changchun to Hold International Agriculture Exposition

Northeast China's Jinlin province, one of China's largest grain production bases, is to hold an international exposition on agriculture and foodstuffs in Changchun, capital of the province, from August 15 to 19. More than 100 agricultural enterprises from foreign countries and 500 domestic enterprises involving intensive farming and foodstuff processing industries will attend the five-day fair. Changchun is noted as China's "automobile city", but it is also a foodstuff processing city. In 1999, the output value of the foodstuff processing industry was 15 billion yuan.

The foodstuff processing trade has become the second largest pillar industry in Changchun City, said Li Shu, mayor of Changchun. Li, chairman of the organizing committee of the exposition, said that Changchun will present more than 200 projects that will greatly improve green food production, processing technology for agricultural side-line products, open up local products and improve the raising of domestic animals and poultry.

Agricultural specialists and scholars at home and abroad will attend a seminar on agricultural strategy of the 21st century as well as a seminar called "Open to world and Embrace Challenges" which will focus on economic development in China's rural areas after China's entry into the WTO.
