Panmunjom Proposed as Preparatory Meeting Place for Inter-Korean SummitSeoul Tuesday proposed to Pyongyang that preparatory meetings be held at the truce village of Panmunjom Saturday for the agreed inter-Korean summit on June 12-14.The proposal was conveyed through inter-Korean Red Cross liaison officers at Panmunjom on the telephone. On behalf of the South Korean government, (South) Korean National Red Cross President Chung Won-shik asked Jang Jae-on of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Red Cross to convey the proposal to the DPRK government. The South Korean government also proposed that both Pyongyang and Seoul should send their five-member negotiation teams led by a vice minister to attend the preparatory meetings. In early April this year, South Korea and the DPRK reached an agreement in China, under which South Korean President Kim Dae-jung will travel to Pyongyang for a summit with DPRK leader Kim Jong-il. It will be the first-ever inter-Korean summit since the Korean War in the early 1950s. |
