Playbill for Coming Beijing Performance Gala Set

Producers of the upcoming Beijing performance gala Monday released the playbill for the event scheduled for May 1 to 31.

More than 1,000 artists from 24 countries and regions will join the largest-ever performance festival ever held in China, sources with the China Performing Arts Agency (CPAA) said.

Georges Bizet's opera "Carmen" will be shown on May 1 at the opening ceremony of the festival named "Beijing 2000."

A celebration will also take place at Culture Square near Xidan in downtown Beijing.

During the festival, the Royal Danish Ballet, Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, the NDR Symphony Orchestra of Hamburg, Verenigte Buehnen Vien and the Israeli Youth Symphony Orchestra will perform in the Chinese capital.

Moreover, many exhibitions, including those on modern photography, Italian violins, and Yugoslavian paintings, will take place during the gala.

The Ministry of Culture, the Beijing municipal government, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, and the National Tourism Administration are jointly sponsoring the event.
