China Opposes U.S. Sales of Aegis Destroyer, Radar to Taiwan: FM SpokesmanThe Chinese government demands that the United States government prohibit all sales of advanced weapons to Taiwan, including the Aegis-armed destroyer and long- range radar, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi at a press conference Tuesday. In response to a question on the recent U.S.-Taiwan military consultations in Washington, Sun said that China is consistently and firmly opposed to any U.S. arms sales to Taiwan and has repeatedly lodged representations to the U.S. side on this matter. "The Chinese government demands that the U.S. government strictly observe principles enshrined in the three Sino-U.S. Joint Communiques and prohibit all sales of weapons to Taiwan," Sun said. The U.S. government has made solemn commitments to the Chinese side through various documents that it will gradually reduce and finally terminate all arms sales to Taiwan, the spokesman pointed out. "We hope that the U.S. side will honor its promises, for supplying weapons to Taiwan means lending help to the Taiwan- independence activists and will seriously compromise cross-straits relations, leading to further tensions across the Taiwan Straits," Sun commented. Only when the U.S. side carries out its promises can the Sino-U. S. relations continue to develop on a sound and stable track, and the cross-straits situation be eased, Sun emphasized. |
