Freedom of Press Protected by Basic Law: Tung Chee Hwa

Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Tung Chee Hwa said on April 17 that freedom of the press, speech and publication of Hong Kong is protected by the Basic Law.

Recently, the discussion on how Hong Kong's media should handle Taiwan's news reports has attracted the attention of some social personages to the freedom of the press. Tung said, in fact, the freedom of the press, speech and publication of Hong Kong can be guaranteed by the Basic Law and the media can continue to act in accordance with the laws of Hong Kong.

Tung said: "As Chief Executive, I will unswervingly implement the Basic Law which protects the freedom of the press."

The SAR government has consistently supported reunification of the country according to the 'One China' principle and the 'One Country, Two Systems' policy. "As a Chinese, it's my strong desire to see an early reunification of the motherland. I believe that this is also the common wish of the overwhelming majority of the Hong Kong people," He remarked.

He said that 'the forces for 'Taiwan independence' may exert serious influence on cross-Strait relationship and economy, on Sino-US relationship and the situation within the Asia-Pacific region and therefore it may also cause unfavorable factors on the investment environment of Hong Kong and its reviving economy. In the future, we will continue to successfully implement the 'One Country, Two Systems' policy, which will contribute to the reunification of the country.
