HK Should Also Adhere to "One China Principle," SpokesmanA spokesman of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) stressed April 17 that one China principle should be adhered to in Hong Kong as well it is part of Chinese territory."After Hong Kong's return to China, the Central People's Government and its organs stationed in Hong Kong have firmly implemented the policies of 'one country, two systems', 'Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong' and a high degree of autonomy, strictly acted in accordance with the Basic Law and have refrained from interfering in affairs within the high degree of autonomy enjoyed by Hong Kong," the spokesman said. "This is a fact widely acknowledged by the international community," the spokesman noted. "Press freedom in Hong Kong is guaranteed by the Basic Law," he said. "And the one China principle should be adhered to in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as well since Hong Kong is part of Chinese territory. It is inappropriate and not right to advocate and disseminate views of independence for Taiwan," the spokesman added. "Hong Kong affairs are the internal matter of China in which no foreign country should interfere," he stressed. The spokesman made the remarks when answering journalists' questions on the statements by the U.S. State Department and the British Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Office spokesmen, saying that they were "dismayed" or "very concerned" over the remarks of Wang Fengchao, the deputy director of the Central Government Liaison Office in HKSAR, on the Hong Kong media coverage of the question of Taiwan. |
